Hydra Energy boosts Canadian hydrogen mobility plans with eight offtake agreements

Hydra Energy has announced it has signed agreements with eight new commercial truck fleets for its hydrogen-truck roll out plans for Prince George, British Columbia, Canada.

Representing 82 Class 8 trucks to be retrofitted to Hydra’s proprietary hydrogen-diesel, co-combustion conversion technology, the trucks are set to refuel at what the company is calling the ‘world’s largest’ hydrogen refuelling station, currently under development by Hydra.

The company signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Arrow Transportation Systems, Excel Transportation, Edgewater Holdings, Wilson Bros. Enterprises, Burke Purdon Enterprises, Godsoe Contracting, Keis Trucking, and Peace Valley Industries, all operating in British Columbia.

Expected to be operational by 2024, the station will provide green hydrogen produced on site by two 5MW electrolysers powered by hydroelectricity.

Hydra says the new truck fleet commitments and supporting infrastructure make this the largest commercial deployment of hydrogen-co-combustion transportation vehicles in the world.

The vehicle conversations will be carried out by Hydra’s installation partner, First Truck Centre.

“Securing immediate offtakers for our station’s low-carbon hydrogen is another critical piece of our Prince George HaaS (hydrogen-as-a-service) blueprint, illustrating to potential investors and licensees how hydrogen supply and demand can profitably come together,” said Jessica Verhagen, CEO of Hydra Energy.

Verhagen added, “We look forward to working with First Truck Centre to start converting these trucks about six months prior to our station’s opening and to continuing working with the City of Prince George as the flagship stop in the Western Canadian Hydrogen Corridor.”

The company has said the eight companies represent a range of fleet sizes and types of heavy-duty trucks which it believes highlights the cost-effectiveness of its HaaS business model.
