Californian hydrogen electrolyser firm Ohmium International has launched a 2GW factory in India to produce its fully assembled systems.
The factory in Doddaballapura, outside of Bengaluru, covers some 14,000 square metres of production space, with potential for the capacity of the site to double to 4GW.
Coming as Ohmium’s second manufacturing site in India, the company’s CEO Arne Ballantine, said it will allow the firm to deliver electrolysers to customers across in India and around the world.
India is increasingly being viewed as a potential manufacturing powerhouse for western hydrogen technology providers.
Last year the India Hydrogen Alliance (IH2A) estimated the market for Indian-manufactured hydrogen equipment could reach $50bn by 2030 – with 34{c431b1036349617aea55b35aa92592c3cb3fecc7f94273a754a3b674e9a603ce} belonging to electrolyser stacks.

While, to the fears of many, China looks poised to dominate the hydrogen technology market, assurance industry sources have told H2 View, India is a much more open and certifiable manufacturing market.
Ballantine previously told H2 View the company had made itself well established in India due to the “wonderful engineering talent” and “extremely capable” supply chain.
Ashwin Varma, Ohmium’s Chief Operating Officer, said, “By implementing the best practices of standardised, high-quality and efficient manufacturing, we can build systems that achieve superior performance at a very competitive cost.”
While also working on projects globally, Ohmium in April partnered with Tata Projects to jointly develop green hydrogen projects in India and was selected for incentives under the Indian Government’s first Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) round.
