EnBW to market green ammonia from Norwegian project | Power

Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) will market 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia from the Skipavika Green Ammonia (SkiGA) project in western Norway.

Volumes of the hydrogen carrier are expected to become available each year from 2027, a year after the NOK 4bn ($362m) site is planned to open. EnBW has called for interested parties to come forward and register.

The SkiGA initiative boasts a 130MW electrolyser and is anticipated to cut annual carbon emissions by around 240,000 tonnes compared to the use of grey ammonia. Using green electricity makes SkiGA one of Europe’s first emission-free green ammonia facilities.

In 2023, EnBW entered into a cooperation with Norwegian partner FUELLA, with a 10{c431b1036349617aea55b35aa92592c3cb3fecc7f94273a754a3b674e9a603ce} equity stake to support the investment decision and secure exclusive rights to a long-term offtake agreement. SkiGA was then selected for funding as part of the European Hydrogen Bank’s first competition auction.

“The volumes of green ammonia secured for EnBW give us a good starting position in the market ramp-up and mark a further step on the way to a carbon-free energy supply,” explained Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW.

Heydecker added, “We’re delighted to have found a partner in FUELLA in Norway because together we can gain essential experience in developing and upscaling a green gas infrastructure.”

EnBW recently announced plans to invest around €1bn in establishing and expanding the national hydrogen core network (HCN) in Germany.
