Euglena and Petronas Research of Malaysia Comprehensive joint research agreement concluded regarding large-scale production technology of microalgae for biofuel feedstock.
Euglena Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Izumo Mitsuru; hereinafter referred to as “Euglena Co.”) is pleased to announce that it has signed a comprehensive joint research agreement on August 21, 2024 with Malaysia’s Petronas Research Sdn. Bhd. (hereinafter referred to as “Petronas Research”) to establish large-scale production technology for microalgae and use it as a raw material for biofuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel fuel (Renewable Diesel Fuel or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)). Petronas Research is a subsidiary of the research and development division of Malaysia’s global energy group Petroliam Nasional Berhad (hereinafter referred to as “PETRONAS”).

Euglena Co. and Petronas Research will begin joint research into the development of technologies for the large-scale cultivation of microalgae, algae collection, oil extraction, and the use of by-products such as defatted algae, with the aim of supplying raw materials for biofuel to the project* to build and operate a biofuel production plant jointly undertaken by Euglena Co., Ltd., PETRONAS S.A., and Enilive S.p.A., which announced its final investment decision on July 26, 2024. *
