Masdar and Airbus partner on SAF produced from green hydrogen

Masdar has signed an agreement with Airbus to collaborate on the development and growth of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), green hydrogen and direct air capture technologies.

Direct Air Capture technologies can enable the capturing of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) which could, in combination with hydrogen, be used to produce synthetic SAF.

Precedence Research estimates that the use of SAF based on green hydrogen and direct air capture can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 95{7bfcd0aebedba9ec56d5615176ab7cebc5409dfb82345290162ba6c44abf8bc8} when compared with conventional jet fuel.

The agreement was signed by Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Chief Green Hydrogen Officer for Masdar, and Mikail Houari, President of Airbus Africa and Middle East.

Al Ramahi said, “This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) further amplifies Masdar’s commitment to accelerating the reduction of global carbon emissions and pioneering worldwide efforts towards decarbonisation.”

“SAF is one of the best solutions for reducing the aviation sector’s carbon footprint,” said Houari. “This agreement will support in advancing its much-needed development and growth.

“We are committed to contributing to driving innovation to support the ambition set by IATA, ATAG and ICAO to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. We have a legacy of successful collaboration in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that has contributed to advancing the country’s aerospace sector capabilities.”

Masdar announced it would collaborate on the production of SAF from solid waste and renewable hydrogen earlier this year, in partnership with Etihad Airways, bp, ADNOC and Tadweer (Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company).

Under the agreement, the companies will conduct a joint feasibility study on exploring the production of SAF, renewable diesel, naphtha, and other products using municipal solid waste and renewable hydrogen, in the UAE.
