Uniper secures hydrogen off-take from Nordic projects | Technology

Uniper has agreed to potentially off-take hydrogen from Norwegian Hydrogen and Provaris’ export projects in the Nordics.

Under a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the three companies aim to “strengthen the development of hydrogen supply from the Nordics to import hubs in north-western Europe.”

German energy company Uniper will be supplied with RFNBO-compliant (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) compressed gaseous hydrogen, delivered to a port defined by Uniper utilising Provaris’ GH2 carriers and GH2 storage barges.

Norwegian Hydrogen and Provaris extended their collaboration in April (2024), to accelerate the development of new hydrogen export sites across the Nordics. These projects are expected to be strategically located in areas with robust grid connections and power supplies.

“I cannot think of a better offtake partner than Uniper to support the development of our joint projects,” claimed Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen. “This new agreement is positive for all the three parties involved, and I am confident that it will bring strong and tangible results.”

Just last month (July), the German Government approved plans to import hydrogen, enabling up to 2.73 million tonnes of the low-carbon fuel to be introduced to the country by 2030.

The German Cabinet said that by 2045, the country’s demand could increase to 500TWh of hydrogen and about 200TWh of hydrogen derivatives.

In May (2024), Uniper announced it would develop a model to import up to 140,000 tonnes of green hydrogen via Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ (CIP) 1GW production project in Denmark.
